Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Counselling for Individuals, Couples and Teens in Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, London and online

I believe that for the most of us our relationships are deeply important but despite best efforts and intentions they can, at times, be confusing, complex or downright hard. There isn’t a set of interpersonal skills we get taught along the way. Unless we’re lucky enough to grow up in a perfectly loving setting we won’t automatically acquire secure relationship functioning. I’m convinced this area can be improved at any age and stage.

I use a psychodynamic perspective with a relational focus to work with individuals and couples on whatever difficulties or concerns they bring. Alongside overcoming their troubles clients often develop their sense of self plus increase ability to build and sustain meaningful relationships.

Individual therapy

Individuals come when not feeling good about themselves or to work through something difficult, to understand themselves better, if they’re feeling stuck or stuck how to feel. For anxiety, or to unburden themselves, to cope better or stop feeling they’re not coping. Whatever the bundle of feelings and motivations we work to gain sense and understanding, clarify what’s not working or holding them back so they can then make long-lasting personality changes and different choices moving forward.

Couple therapy

All sorts of issues can destabilise a relationship - infidelity, life changes, sex, unresolved arguments on repeat, extended family, money, destructive conflict, feeling unappreciated, division of labour arguments, problems communicating, feeling disconnected, sex, intimacy issues, a baby, no baby... While no two couple cases are ever quite the same all cases will fall into one of three categories, dependent on what the couple wants for their future. The largest group is couples invested in staying together wanting to improve their relationship. The aim for these couples is to reveal the underlying dynamics in their relationship while also encouraging them to take action straight away to stop any unwanted patterns. The second (smallest) contingent want help weighing up whether to stay together or separate. The third brief is helping couples navigate divorce and separation. For couples pledging ‘amicability’ it’s defining what that will look like. For many couples the separation experience is highly emotionally charged due to the grief, difficult decisions, change and periods of uncertainty.  Disentangling from each other happens on various levels, emotional, physical, psychological, financial. Part of processing involves working out what went wrong to not take it into the future.

Young people

My aim is to support young people navigate difficulties. These can show up in the form of life events or relational difficulties. Sometimes they’re evident in the parent-child relationship. Whatever the difficulty I offer young people a safe space to think, guidance and support while they’re working to where they want to be. I offer parent sessions and one to one sessions for adolescents.

How I work

I believe we can’t open up to everyone so a therapeutic ‘fit’ is important. Following a first contact by email, we meet for an initial assessment consultation either online or phone. It’s an uncharged exploratory session for me to learn about you, understand what we would be working on and for you to consider what working with me feels like. After we’ll agree logistics for sessions but if working with me doesn’t feel right or what you’re bringing doesn’t match what I can offer I’ll try to recommend another therapist with suitable experience. When I work with teens or adult individuals it’s generally a weekly session format with either a set number of agreed sessions or open ended. It varies with couples. Some request weekly sessions, others might come with a crisis to work through on consecutive nights, some want ad-hoc or regular check ins. Occasionally couples return after an unexpected change or event has affected the relationship. Where I work: I have experience working in charities, NHS and local community counselling services. Currently I work privately face-to-face in Tunbridge Wells, London, Sevenoaks and online.
